8-Day Costa Rica Itinerary:
La Fortuna & Manuel Antonio

Planning your first trip to Costa Rica? This 8-day Costa Rica itinerary through La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio is the route I design again and again for my clients.

Eight days. Two incredible regions. Smart pacing.

This sample itinerary shows how I typically structure a trip through La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio — blending rainforest adventure, wildlife, and beach time without feeling rushed.

It isn’t a package. It’s a starting point.

When we plan together, every hotel, guide, and experience is customized around you. But this flow works beautifully time and time again.

A Quick Note Before We Dive In

Honest note on food

Costa Rican food is simple — rice, beans, fresh fruit, good seafood on the coast. It's not a foodie destination. But the resorts eat well, the fresh fruit is incredible, and you're honestly too busy having the time of your life to care about the menu.

Costa Rica surprised me. The colors, the animals, the people, the energy — it's genuinely different from anywhere else I've been. If you're looking for a trip that feels exotic without being overwhelming, this is it.

Rainforest adventure in La Fortuna. Pacific coast romance and wildlife in Manuel Antonio. Eight days that balance activity and relaxation in a way that works for both families and couples who want to actually splurge on something special.

I've done this trip myself and I book it regularly. When we plan together I'll make sure the logistics are handled — including private drivers between regions, because I cannot imagine renting a car here. The roads are wild, the motorcycles are everywhere, and your vacation should not involve white-knuckling through mountain passes.

Days 1–4: La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano

Day 1: Arrival & Hot Springs

Private driver from San José airport north toward La Fortuna, at the base of Arenal Volcano. The drive is part of the experience — lush hills, small villages, your first real glimpse of Costa Rica's landscape. You'll settle into a hot springs resort where natural volcanic thermal pools wind through tropical gardens. Dinner with volcano views. Rainforest sounds at night. Costa Rica moves at a slower pace and you'll feel it immediately.

The hot springs resort is worth splurging on here. It sets the tone for the whole trip — and after a long travel day, soaking in natural thermal pools with an Arenal volcano view is exactly the right arrival.

Day 2: Ziplining Through the Rainforest

One of Costa Rica's signature experiences — soaring through the jungle canopy between platforms high above the rainforest floor. Toucans, monkeys, and bright tropical birds along the way. Afternoon back at the resort in the thermal pools. Adventure and relaxation in perfect balance.

Day 3: White Water Rafting

Class II-III rapids through jungle scenery — exciting but approachable, even for first-timers. Waterfalls and wildlife along the riverbanks. Guides who know the river and the animals incredibly well. One of those days that feels genuinely adventurous without being scary.

Day 4: Sloths & Wildlife

A guided naturalist tour into the rainforest to find sloths — and they always find them. Tree frogs, tropical birds, butterflies, monkeys moving through the canopy. This is the day that reminds you Costa Rica's magic isn't just the adventure. It's the nature. Kids absolutely lose their minds on this day.

The sloth tour is consistently one of the most talked-about days of the trip — for families and couples alike. Don't skip it thinking it sounds low-key. It's special.

Days 5–8: Manuel Antonio & The Pacific Coast

Day 5: Journey to the Coast

Private driver from the rainforest to Manuel Antonio on the Pacific coast. The scenery shifts dramatically — mountains give way to palm-lined beaches and ocean views. Settle into your coastal resort where jungle literally meets the sea. Monkeys, iguanas, and colorful birds wander the hotel grounds. Ocean sunsets. This is where the trip shifts into a different gear.

Day 6: Catamaran Sailing

Out onto the Pacific for a catamaran excursion along the coastline — jungle-covered cliffs, hidden beaches, snorkeling in clear water, dolphin sightings that happen more often than not, lunch and drinks on board. For couples this is the most romantic day of the trip. For families it's the one the kids talk about for months.

Day 7: Mangroves & Manuel Antonio National Park

Morning kayaking through mangrove forests — calm waterways, dense tropical vegetation, monkeys and iguanas and crabs along the roots. Then Manuel Antonio National Park for rainforest trails, wildlife, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Costa Rica's biodiversity in a single day.

Day 8: Beach Morning & Departure

Intentionally relaxed last morning — pool, beach, ocean views, fresh fruit, one more cup of coffee in the jungle. Then private transfer back to the airport. Costa Rica has a way of resetting people. Most travelers leave already wondering when they can come back.
