12-Day Croatia Itinerary:
Split, Islands, Dubrovnik & Montenegro
If you’ve been dreaming about Croatia, this is the route I design over and over again for my clients.
Twelve days. A few incredible bases along the Adriatic. Smart pacing that lets you actually enjoy each place.
This sample itinerary shows how I typically structure a trip through Split, the islands, Dubrovnik, and Montenegro- blending history, coastal scenery, food, wine, and time on the water without making the trip feel rushed.
It isn’t a package. It’s a starting point.
When we plan together, every hotel, guide, and experience is customized around you. But this flow works beautifully time and time again.
A Quick Note Before We Dive In
Who this trip is for
Couples, groups of friends, and empty nesters who've done the big Europe hits and want coastline, ancient history, great wine, and a place that still feels like a real discovery. If you're debating Croatia vs Greece — call me. We should talk.
You've done Italy. Maybe Greece. And now someone mentioned Croatia and you thought — wait, should I have gone there first?
Yes. Probably. But now is still perfect.
Croatia surprised me the first time I went. Ancient history, impossibly blue water, incredible seafood, and some of the friendliest people I've encountered anywhere in Europe. It has the vibes of Italy and Greece — combined — without feeling overdone. And paired with Montenegro? It's one of the best trips I plan.
This is the 12-day route I design over and over for travelers who are ready for something beyond the obvious. It isn't a package. It's a starting point — and when we plan together, every hotel, boat, and guide gets built around you.
Days 1–3: Split
Day 1: Arrival & Easy Old Town Wandering
Private driver from the airport into Split's Old Town. Drop your bags and ease in slowly — Split is compact and walkable and one of the most livable-feeling old cities in Europe. Diocletian's Palace, the Riva promenade, aperol with a harbor view, gelato in the marble alleys. Let the Mediterranean pace take over.
Day 2: Split Orientation
The basement halls of Diocletian's Palace, the Green Market, Peristyle Square, and a sunset walk up Marjan Hill for views over the Adriatic. Split is where travelers realize Croatia feels different from Italy or France — more local, more laid-back, and deeply connected to the sea.
Day 3: Islands or Beach Day
Flexible depending on your travel style. A boat excursion to Hvar or the Blue Cave. A beach club afternoon. Or just exploring Split's quieter neighborhoods at your own pace. Croatia is best when you leave room for the water.
Days 4–6: Hvar
Day 4: Ferry to Hvar
The ferry ride itself is part of the experience — turquoise water, island views, and that moment when Hvar Town's harbor comes into view. Settle in, explore the Spanish Fortress for panoramic views, aperitivo along the waterfront. Hvar has energy but it's still small enough to feel relaxed.
Day 5: Island Life
This is the day for actually being on the island rather than checking things off. A private boat to the Pakleni Islands, swimming in hidden coves, a long seaside lunch with local wine. The rhythm of the Adriatic becomes clear here: swim, eat, relax, repeat.
Day 6: Wine & Lavender Villages
Hvar's interior feels completely different from the harbor. A private driver takes you to Stari Grad, family-run Dalmatian wineries, lavender fields, and stone villages. Quiet, authentic, and consistently one of the surprise favorites of the trip.
The lavender fields and vineyard lunch day is the one people talk about when they get home. Don't skip it in favor of another beach day — you'll have plenty of those.
Days 7–8: Dubrovnik
Day 7: Arrival in Dubrovnik
Ferry or private transfer south along the Dalmatian Coast. Inside the Old Town walls, Dubrovnik feels cinematic — polished limestone streets, harbor views, small alley restaurants. Best enjoyed slowly from the very first afternoon.
Day 8: Dubrovnik Highlights
A guided walk through the UNESCO-listed Old Town, walking the city walls, the Rector's Palace, and the stories of the city's maritime power and resilience. Afternoon options: kayaking along the walls, the cable car to Mount Srđ for sunset, or a seaside dinner just outside the Old Town. This is where Croatia's beauty feels almost unreal.
Days 9-12: Montenegro
Day 9: Enter Montenegro
Cross into Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor — a small, spectacular country most people haven't been to yet. A fjord-like coastline surrounded by mountains. The atmosphere shifts immediately. Calmer, more reflective, storybook-like in a way that's hard to describe until you're there.
Montenegro is the part of this trip that makes people say "I had no idea." That reaction never gets old.
Day 10: Kotor & Bay Exploration
The medieval Old Town of Kotor, fortress walls with incredible views, and nearby seaside villages like Perast. The bay feels almost storybook. One of those places that makes you want to come back and stay longer.
Day 11: Montenegro Countryside
The Serpentine Road above Kotor, Lovćen National Park, lunch in a traditional mountain village. Mountains rising straight from the sea. The scenery here is genuinely dramatic in a way that surprises even seasoned travelers.
Day 12: Departure
Private transfer to Dubrovnik Airport. Most travelers leave Croatia feeling like they found something special before the rest of the world catches on. That feeling means the trip worked.
