10 Common London Travel Mistakes (and What to Do Instead)

Avoid these slip-ups to make your trip smoother, smarter, and way more fun.

London is one of the most exciting, historic, and diverse cities in the world—but it’s also huge, busy, and full of small details that can trip up first-time (and even second-time) visitors.

Here are 10 travel mistakes I see all the time—plus what to do instead, so your trip feels less stressful and more spectacular.

1. Expecting to Dine at Trendy Spots Without a Reservation 🍽️

London’s restaurant scene is world-class and wildly competitive. The best places book out in advance.
Don’t wing it. Use email or online booking portals to grab a reservation. Pro tip: plan your sightseeing by neighborhood and book meals nearby.

2. Taking Taxis Instead of the Tube 🚇

You don’t need to spend a fortune (or get stuck in traffic). Grab an Oyster Card and hop on the Tube—it’s fast, safe, and way more efficient.
Yes, the map looks like a rainbow threw up. But it’s intuitive once you get the hang of it—and I’ll happily walk you through it.

3. Skipping Museums to “Save Money” 🖼️

Huge mistake. Many of London’s best museums are totally free—so even if you only pop in for 30 minutes, it’s worth it.
Favorites:

  • National Gallery

  • British Museum

  • National Portrait Gallery (My go-to for a quick visit with Henry VIII and a few of his wives.)

4. Only Eating Fish & Chips 🍛

Yes, it’s iconic. But London is global. Indian food, West African cuisine, modern British tasting menus—don’t limit yourself.
Personal favorite: Dishoom for a memorable Indian meal in a stunning setting.

5. Overpacking Your Itinerary 📍

London is massive, and top sights are spread out.
Break up your days by neighborhood, and give yourself space to enjoy each area fully—like a morning in Notting Hill, afternoon in Kensington, and evening in Soho.

Bonus tip: Plan an afternoon reset at your hotel before heading back out for dinner.

6. Skipping the Beefeaters at the Tower of London 🏰

If you go to the Tower of London, you must take a tour with the Yeoman Warders (aka Beefeaters).
They’re hilarious, informative, and a bit cheeky. (Ask 16-year-old me, who got roasted by one for not paying attention in front of 40 strangers. Lesson learned.)

7. Not Paying Attention to Street Signs at Crosswalks 🚶‍♀️

The UK drives on the left, which means crossing the street can feel like a brain teaser.
Thankfully, London sidewalks helpfully say “LOOK LEFT” or “LOOK RIGHT.” Trust the signs. Don’t trust your instincts.

8. Booking a Hotel Too Far Outside the City 🛏️

London’s outer neighborhoods are charming—but if you only have a few days, stay central.
It’s worth spending a little more to avoid long commutes and get the most out of every day.

9. Tipping Too Much 💷

Tipping culture in the UK is not the same as in the U.S.

  • Taxis: 10–15%

  • Restaurants: Check for a service charge—if there isn’t one, 10–15% is fine

  • Bars: No tip needed for just ordering drinks

10. Not Researching Whether the London Pass is Worth It 🎟️

The London Pass isn’t for everyone—but it can save you time and money if you plan to hit multiple major sights.
I used it to finally visit spots I’d skipped on past trips like the Churchill War Rooms and HMS Belfast—and it paid off.
