🐘 Things That Surprised Me on Safari

I thought I knew what to expect before heading out on safari… but a few things still caught me off guard. If you’ve ever dreamed of this type of trip, here are the surprises that stood out most:

🚐 Getting Around These lodges aren’t exactly next door to the airport. Think bush planes, boat rides, or long drives down bumpy dirt roads. I personally loved all of it (I’m here for the adventure!)—but it’s important to know what to expect so you’re not surprised on day one.

⏰ Timing If you refuse to set an alarm, safari life may not be your jam. Sunrise and sunset are prime game-drive hours, because that’s when the animals are most active. If you need downtime, make sure to plan an extra day or two to balance rest with adventure.

🌍 Locations Every region is completely different. One might require certain vaccines, another might highlight big cats, while another showcases elephants or rhinos. The experience changes based on where you go—so picking the right fit matters.

🚙 Cars Not all safari vehicles are the same. Some are open-air, some have a roof, some fit 6 passengers, others 9. Ask how many people will be in each car—and avoid the dreaded “middle seat” where your view is limited.

👕 Outfits This deserves a post of its own. What you pack matters more than you think. I did a little pre-trip shopping and was so glad I did.

A safari is unforgettable—but it’s also a very different type of travel than most people are used to. The more you know before you go, the more magical those “first lion sighting” moments will be.
