The Questions You’ll Always Get While Traveling ✈️
Spoiler alert: They’re the same everywhere
Every time I travel, I seem to answer the same handful of questions. So, on a recent trip, I decided to track them—because #nerd. But also because these repeat questions tell you a lot about how people interact when you're out in the world.
So here are the ones that come up constantly—and how I answer (and how you might want to, too).
🥤 Still, Sparkling, or Tap Water?
Still, please.
I am not a sparkling girl—unless I’m in Italy and it’s hot out and I’m trying to be fancy for no reason.
Tap water is rarely offered unless you specifically ask for it. So unless they say “tap is fine,” I just go with still and move on.
Pro Tip: In most of Europe, you’re paying for water either way. It’s totally normal.
💳 Would You Like to Pay in Dollars or Local Currency?
Local currency—always.
The exchange rate is nearly always better through your own bank or credit card than what you’ll get letting a restaurant or store convert it “for you.”
So when in doubt: local is the way to go. And maybe double-check those ATM fees before you fly out.
🇺🇸 Where Are You From?
“America.”
Then: “Tennessee.”
And then if their face still looks blank: “Nashville—home of country music!”
Unless you're from New York, LA, or Miami, assume you’ll have to explain where your state is on the map. And hey, it’s kind of fun to be the “ambassador” for your hometown.
🗳️ How Do You Feel About Politics?
Oof. Tricky one.
When it comes up, I usually say:
“Politics in America is complicated—and personal. But I’m happy to share what life really looks like, because the media doesn’t always show the full picture.”
And truly, that’s one of the best parts of travel. You get to show people what your version of America is. Not the news. Not the stereotypes. You.
🌍 Where’s Your Next Trip?
This one always makes me laugh because... do you mean work trip, family trip, or the trip I’m manifesting from the airport security line?
I usually say:
“There’s always something in the works—but right now, I’m trying to just enjoy this one.”
(But let’s be honest: I have a running list at all times.)
👶 What Do You Do? Stay Home With the Kids?
Ah, my favorite setup.
“I’m actually a travel advisor—I design custom trips for families, couples, and curious adventurers who want their travel to be seamless and meaningful. So I travel for work, and I plan travel for others.”
Cue: “Oh wow! I didn’t even know that was a thing people still did!”
Yep. And we do it really well. 😉
So—What Are You Always Asked?
I’m curious—do you get these same questions when you travel? Or something totally different?
Drop your go-to responses in the comments or shoot me a DM—I’d love to hear them!
And if one of your most-asked questions is “how do you plan all this stuff?”…
Well, I know a girl. 😉 Start HERE
