12-Day Croatia Itinerary:
Split, Islands, Dubrovnik & Montenegro
If you’ve been dreaming about Croatia, this is the route I design over and over again for my clients.
Twelve days. A few incredible bases along the Adriatic. Smart pacing that lets you actually enjoy each place.
This sample itinerary shows how I typically structure a trip through Split, the islands, Dubrovnik, and Montenegro- blending history, coastal scenery, food, wine, and time on the water without making the trip feel rushed.
It isn’t a package. It’s a starting point.
When we plan together, every hotel, guide, and experience is customized around you. But this flow works beautifully time and time again.
A Quick Note Before We Dive In
This itinerary reflects the pacing and structure I’ve found works best for travelers visiting Croatia and the Dalmatian Coast for the first time.
Your accommodations will vary.
Your islands will vary.
Your coastal base might vary.
There are endless ways to experience Croatia - different islands, different towns, different rhythms. Consider this the highlight version: the framework that shows you the best of the Dalmatian Coast while still leaving space to slow down, swim, and actually enjoy where you are.
Days 1–3: Split
Day 1: Arrival & Easy Old Town Wandering
After landing in Split, a private driver will bring you from the airport into the Old Town.
You’ll drop your bags, take a deep breath, and ease into Croatia slowly. Split’s Old Town is compact and walkable - perfect for your first afternoon.
Think:
• Walking the streets of Diocletian’s Palace
• A waterfront stroll along the Riva promenade
• Espresso or aperol with a harbor view
• Gelato while getting happily lost in the marble alleys
The goal: stay awake, move your body, and let the Mediterranean pace take over.
Day 2: Split Orientation
Your first full day is about understanding how the city works.
Split is layered - Roman ruins, local markets, seaside cafes - and once you know the layout, everything feels easy.
You might explore:
• The basement halls of Diocletian’s Palace
• Peristyle Square and the Cathedral of Saint Domnius
• The Green Market just outside the palace walls
• A sunset walk up Marjan Hill for views over the Adriatic
Split is lively but relaxed. This is where travelers realize Croatia feels different from Italy or France — more local, more laid-back, and deeply connected to the sea.
Day 3: Islands or Beach Day
Today is flexible depending on your travel style.
Some clients choose to start island hopping early. Others enjoy a slower coastal day.
Options include:
• A boat excursion to Hvar or the Blue Cave
• A beach club afternoon at Kasjuni Beach
• Exploring Split’s quieter neighborhoods and cafes
There’s no wrong choice. Croatia is best when you leave room for the water.
Days 4–6: Hvar
Day 4: Ferry to Hvar
Today you’ll take a ferry from Split to Hvar.
The ride itself is part of the experience - turquoise water, island views, and that moment when the harbor of Hvar Town comes into view.
Once settled into your hotel, spend the afternoon exploring:
• The Spanish Fortress for panoramic views
• Wandering the harbor and marble square
• Aperitivo along the waterfront
Hvar has energy - but it’s still small enough to feel relaxed.
Day 5: Island Life
Hvar is where the trip slows down.
This is the day for enjoying the island rather than checking sights off a list.
Ideas might include:
• A private boat exploring the Pakleni Islands
• Swimming in hidden coves and turquoise water
• A long seaside lunch with local wine
The rhythm of the Adriatic becomes clear here: swim, eat, relax, repeat.
Day 6: Wine & Lavender Villages
Beyond the harbor, Hvar’s interior feels completely different.
A private driver can take you across the island to visit:
• The historic village of Stari Grad
• Family-run Dalmatian wineries
• Lavender fields and stone villages
It’s quiet, authentic, and often becomes a favorite surprise of the trip.
Days 7–8: Dubrovnik
Day 7: Travel to Dubrovnik
Today you’ll travel south along the Dalmatian Coast to Dubrovnik.
Depending on timing, this may be by ferry or private transfer.
Once inside the Old Town walls, Dubrovnik feels cinematic.
Spend your first afternoon enjoying:
• Wandering the polished limestone streets
• Exploring the small alley restaurants
• Sunset along the harbor
Dubrovnik is dramatic — and best enjoyed slowly.
Day 8: Dubrovnik Highlights
A guided walk through Dubrovnik’s UNESCO-listed Old Town helps bring the city’s history to life.
Highlights typically include:
• Walking the city walls
• The Rector’s Palace and historic squares
• Stories of the city’s maritime power and resilience
In the afternoon, consider:
• A kayak trip along the city walls
• The cable car to Mount Srđ for sunset
• A seaside dinner just outside the Old Town
This is where Croatia’s beauty feels almost unreal.
Days 9-12: Montenegro
Day 9: Enter Montenegro
Today you’ll cross into Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor, a small but spectacular country just south of Croatia.
Your base will be along the Bay of Kotor, a fjord-like coastline surrounded by mountains.
The atmosphere here is calmer and more reflective.
Day 10: Kotor & Bay Exploration
Explore the medieval town of Kotor, one of the Adriatic’s most charming historic centers.
You might:
• Walk the Old Town squares and churches
• Climb part of the fortress walls for incredible views
• Visit nearby seaside villages like Perast
The bay feels almost storybook-like.
Day 11: Montenegro Countryside
A day in Montenegro’s interior shows a completely different landscape.
Possibilities include:
• Driving the famous Serpentine Road above Kotor
• Visiting Lovćen National Park
• Lunch in a traditional mountain village
The scenery here is dramatic — mountains rising straight from the sea.
Day 12: Departure
A private transfer will bring you to Dubrovnik Airport for your flight home.
Logistics are built around comfort and timing - not just convenience.
Most travelers leave Croatia feeling like they discovered something special before the rest of the world catches on.
Let’s Design This Properly
Croatia is not a trip you want to piece together from blog posts and guesswork.
If this itinerary feels like your kind of trip, let’s build it intentionally — selecting the right towns, securing the right guides, and structuring it in a way that actually works. Start with a discovery call and we’ll take it from there.
