12-Day Portugal Itinerary:
Lisbon, Coast & Porto

Planning your first trip to Portugal? This 12-day Portugal itinerary through Lisbon, the Atlantic coast, and Porto is the route I design again and again for my clients.

Twelve days. Two vibrant cities. Iconic coastal landscapes.

This sample itinerary shows how I typically structure a trip through Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, Nazaré, and Porto — blending historic neighborhoods, coastal scenery, wine regions, and incredible food without making the trip feel rushed.

It isn’t a package. It’s a starting point.

When we plan together, every hotel, guide, and experience is customized around you. But this overall flow works beautifully time and time again.

A Quick Note Before We Dive In

This itinerary reflects the pacing and structure I’ve found works best for travelers visiting Portugal for the first time.

Your accommodations will vary.
Your coastal towns may vary.
Your Douro Valley experience may vary.

There are endless ways to experience Portugal — different cities, different coastal villages, different wine regions.

Consider this the highlight version: the framework that blends Lisbon, Portugal’s Atlantic coast, and Porto with the Douro Valley while still leaving space to slow down and enjoy the rhythm of the country.

Days 1–4: Lisbon

Day 1: Arrival in Lisbon

After landing in Lisbon, a private driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you into the city.

Lisbon is built across seven hills overlooking the Tagus River, giving it incredible viewpoints and a relaxed coastal energy.

After settling into your hotel, the rest of the day is intentionally light.

Think:

• A walk through the Alfama neighborhood
• Sunset views from a miradouro
• Dinner featuring fresh seafood and Portuguese wine

Lisbon is one of Europe’s most charming introductions to the continent — historic, scenic, and deeply connected to the sea.

Day 2: Lisbon Highlights

Today you’ll explore Lisbon with a private guide.

Highlights often include:

• The historic Belém district
Jerónimos Monastery
• The Belém Tower along the river
• Tasting the famous pastéis de nata

Lisbon is a city best explored slowly — wandering streets, riding historic trams, and discovering viewpoints along the way.

Day 3: Sintra Day Trip

Today you’ll venture into the fairytale landscapes of Sintra, just outside Lisbon.

The hills of Sintra are filled with palaces, castles, and gardens surrounded by lush forest.

Highlights typically include:

• Pena Palace, one of Portugal’s most famous castles
Quinta da Regaleira with its famous spiral well
• Exploring the charming historic town center

Sintra feels completely different from Lisbon — cooler, greener, and almost storybook-like.

Day 4: Cascais & the Atlantic Coast

Today you’ll follow the coastline west to Cascais, a relaxed seaside town once favored by Portuguese royalty.

Along the way you may stop at:

• Dramatic cliffs along the Atlantic
• The lighthouse and views at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe

Cascais offers:

• Beaches and oceanfront cafés
• A charming marina
• Easy coastal strolling

It’s the perfect contrast to Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods.

Days 5–6: Nazaré & Central Coast

Day 5: Travel North to Nazaré

Today you’ll travel north toward Nazaré, one of Portugal’s most fascinating coastal towns.

Nazaré is known for its traditional fishing culture and enormous Atlantic waves that attract surfers from around the world. Some of the largest waves ever surfed have been recorded here.

The drive north often includes stops at:

• Medieval villages
• Coastal viewpoints
• Small towns filled with Portuguese character

By evening you’ll arrive in Nazaré overlooking the Atlantic.

Day 6: Coastal Portugal

Today you’ll explore the area around Nazaré.

Options often include:

• Visiting the Nazaré cliffs for incredible ocean views
• Watching surfers attempt the famous giant waves
• Exploring nearby historic towns like Óbidos, a walled medieval village

This region feels slower and more local than the big cities.

Days 7–12: Porto & The Douro Valley

Day 7: Continue to Porto

Today you’ll continue north to Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city and one of Europe’s most picturesque destinations.

Colorful buildings cascade down toward the Douro River, creating one of the most iconic skylines in Europe.

After settling into your hotel, enjoy your first evening in the historic Ribeira district.

Think:

• Riverfront cafés
• Local wine bars
• Sunset over the Douro

Day 8: Porto Highlights

Today you’ll explore Porto with a guide.

Highlights often include:

• The Livraria Lello bookstore, one of the most beautiful in the world
• The Clérigos Tower
• Exploring the Ribeira waterfront
• Visiting historic Port wine cellars across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia

Porto is known for its incredible food and wine culture.

Day 9: Douro Valley Wine Region

Today you’ll venture into the UNESCO-listed Douro Valley, one of the world’s oldest wine regions.

Terraced vineyards line the hillsides above the winding Douro River.

Experiences often include:

• Visiting traditional wine estates (quintas)
• Wine tastings overlooking the valley
• A leisurely vineyard lunch

The landscape here feels completely different from the coast — quiet, scenic, and deeply tied to wine culture.

Day 10: Explore Porto

Today is intentionally more flexible.

Options might include:

• Exploring Porto’s historic streets
• Visiting markets and local shops
• Taking a river cruise along the Douro

Portugal rewards travelers who slow down and enjoy its everyday moments.

Day 11: Coastal Porto

Today you might explore Porto’s nearby coast.

Options include:

• Visiting the beaches of Foz do Douro
• Cycling along the riverfront
• Enjoying seafood by the Atlantic

It’s a beautiful way to experience the region beyond the city center.

Day 12: Departure

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Portugal leaves many travelers surprised — not just by its scenery, but by the warmth of its culture, food, and relaxed rhythm of life.

And most leave already planning their return.

Let’s Design This Properly

Portugal is not a trip you want to piece together from blog posts and guesswork.

If this itinerary feels like your kind of trip, let’s build it intentionally — selecting the right towns, securing the right guides, and structuring it in a way that actually works. Start with a discovery call and we’ll take it from there.

Planning fee: $250 per family for trips up to two weeks.
